Prior to writing Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth\, he co-edited and wrote chapters in The Critical Classroom (The Heritage Foundation\, 2022)\, discussing the racial prejudice that comes from the application of critical race theory in K-12 schools. In 2021\, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster nominated Jonathan to serve on the board of the South Carolina Public Charter School District\, a statewide charter school authorizer. He has researched and testified on education policy around the U.S. \nJonathan co-edited and wrote chapters in the book The Not-So-Great Society\, which provides conservative solutions to the problems created by the ever-expanding federal footprint in preschool\, K-12\, and higher education. \nJonathan previously served as the education director at the Goldwater Institute\, where he remains a senior fellow. He was a member of the Arizona Department of Education’s first Steering Committee for Empowerment Scholarship Accounts\, the nation’s first education savings account program. He is also a Senior Fellow with The Beacon Center of Tennessee\, a nonpartisan research organization\, and a contributing scholar for the Georgia Center for Opportunity. \nPrior to joining Goldwater\, Jonathan was the director of accountability for the South Carolina Public Charter School District. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 7th\, join the Martin Center as we welcome author and Asian-American activist Kenny Xu for a virtual talk entitled “Asian-Americans and Meritocracy: Why They Succeed\, and Why the Woke Can’t Stand Them.” \nXu’s presentation is the first in the Martin Center’s bi-monthly series of talks with authors of books about higher education. \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \nKenny Xu’s An Inconvenient Minority sold out the first printing in two days and was highly ranked in the category of Asian American History (#1)\, Discrimination and Racism (#1)\, and Teacher Training and Studies (#1).  \nXu is the president of the nonprofit organization Color Us United\, and the lead insider on the Harvard case.  He has spoken on the consequences of the Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard case and its identity politics ideology in front of groups as diverse as the nationally renowned Pacific Legal Foundation to the Boston Rally for Education Rights to the all-Black Connecticut Parents Union. His commentary has propelled him to interviews with Fox News\, Newsweek\, the Epoch Times and various Youtube\, radio and podcasts\, and features in the New York Times Magazine and NPR. He is a commentary writer for the Wall Street Journal\, the Federalist\, the Washington Examiner\, the Daily Signal\, Quillette\, New York Post and City Journal. His journalism is beloved by the Asian American community and other meritocratic activists. Asian-American activists have frequently solicited his advice on how to organize for meritocracy and equal rights. Ms. Doran has served as President and General Counsel of the North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law since returning to the Institute to reorganize and restart the organization in July 2019. \nShe is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court\, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit\, various federal district courts and all North Carolina Courts. She is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education programs and has published scholarly articles in law reviews\, whitepapers and op-ed commentary. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nStanley Kurtz\, Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. He has led the campaign to reform federal subsidies to academic programs of “area studies” under Title VI of the Higher Education Act\, and has co-authored model campus free speech legislation adopted by several states. \nMr. Kurtz’s latest book\, The Lost History of Western Civilization (National Association of Scholars)\, offers both a critique of deconstructionist history and a new way of looking at America’s cultural conflicts. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTerry Pell\, President of The Center for Individual Rights. Mr. Pell received his Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1996\, his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1981\, and his B.A. from Haverford College in 1976. \nPrior to working for CIR\, Mr. Pell worked as an attorney with the firm of Arent\, Fox\, Kintner\, Plotkin & Kahn. From 1985-1988\, Mr. Pell was a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education. He later served as General Counsel and Chief of Staff at the Office of National Drug Control Policy. He joined CIR in 1997.

La Noue is professor emeritus of political science and professor emeritus of public policy at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She earned her B.A. in Political Science and Psychology from Wellesley College and her M.A and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. She is the recipient of UNC’s Tanner Award for Teaching Excellence\, the Chapman Family Teaching Award\, Honors Carolina’s Manekin Award for Teaching Excellence\, and the department of political science’s Robson Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction. \n  \n  \n David Powers was appointed by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2011 and reappointed in 2015 and 2019 to serve on the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System. Powers serves as the chair of the Committee on University Governance. \nIn his role as a Board member\, Powers is focused on the University’s function as a driver of the state’s economy.

La Noue entitled\,  “Political Reality on North Carolina Campuses: Examining Policy Debates and Forums with Diverse Viewpoints.” Dr. La Noue will present\, followed by commentators UNC political science professor Dr. Sarah Treul and UNC Board of Governors member David Powers. La Noue is professor emeritus of political science and professor emeritus of public policy at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He served as Director of the Policy Sciences graduate program for eighteen years. Dr. La Noue’s research has focused on education law\, civil rights law\, and public policy. He has published numerous articles and six books. His last book\, Silenced Stages: The Loss of Academic Freedom and Campus Policy Debates (2019) documents the widespread failure in higher education to sponsor events where complex policy issues are discussed from a variety of viewpoints. \n  \n  \n Dr. Sarah A.
