Prior to writing Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth\, he co-edited and wrote chapters in The Critical Classroom (The Heritage Foundation\, 2022)\, discussing the racial prejudice that comes from the application of critical race theory in K-12 schools. In 2021\, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster nominated Jonathan to serve on the board of the South Carolina Public Charter School District\, a statewide charter school authorizer. He has researched and testified on education policy around the U.S. \nJonathan co-edited and wrote chapters in the book The Not-So-Great Society\, which provides conservative solutions to the problems created by the ever-expanding federal footprint in preschool\, K-12\, and higher education. \nJonathan previously served as the education director at the Goldwater Institute\, where he remains a senior fellow. He was a member of the Arizona Department of Education’s first Steering Committee for Empowerment Scholarship Accounts\, the nation’s first education savings account program. He is also a Senior Fellow with The Beacon Center of Tennessee\, a nonpartisan research organization\, and a contributing scholar for the Georgia Center for Opportunity. \nPrior to joining Goldwater\, Jonathan was the director of accountability for the South Carolina Public Charter School District. SUMMARY:Restoring Merit to Medical Education
DESCRIPTION:Nearly all of America’s top medical schools have made Critical Race Theory and “anti-racism” parts of their core curriculum. Will the introduction of this ideology lead to discrimination in healthcare or lower educational standards? What can be done to ensure that medical education remains rigorous and centered on the specific needs of the individual patient? \nDr. Stanley Goldfarb\, board chair of Do No Harm\, will join the Martin Center on Thursday\, June 15 to address the growing influence of anti-racist activism in medical schools and share his recommendations on restoring merit to medical education. \nDr. Goldfarb\, a board-certified kidney specialist\, is a former Professor and Associate Dean for Curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has been widely published in medical journals\, as well as The Wall Street Journal\, and is co-host of the Do No Harm podcast. \n\n\n \n

The American public rightly has lost its confidence in higher education and its ability to train tomorrow’s teachers\, physicians\, and leaders. \nThe General Education Act provides a solution. \nThe National Association of Scholars (NAS)\, the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal\, and the Ethics & Public Policy Center (EPPC) have published the new model General Education Act (GEA). The GEA reforms and replaces the failed system of cafeteria-style distribution requirements geared to faculty research specialties\, rather than to the true requisites of liberal education. DESCRIPTION:This event is being co-sponsored by the Bastiat Society of Raleigh. \nAt a time when philanthropy and wealth are under attack – and even cited as “failures” of both capitalism and democracy – it is critical to understand what donor intent is\, and is not. In that capacity she consults with and advises foundations and individual donors on operations\, management and governance issues with a special focus on protecting donor intent. Joanne previously served the Roundtable as vice president of philanthropic services\, and also as senior vice president for public policy. Prior to working at the Roundtable\, she volunteered on the strategy committee of the Alliance for Charitable Reform from 2006 until 2013. \nJoanne has worked at nonprofit and philanthropic organizations for her entire career. She was executive director of the Triad Foundation in Ithaca\, New York from April 2003 through March 2013. She was also executive director of the Park Foundation\, a program associate at The Atlantic Philanthropies and an instructor in American history at Cornell University and Ithaca College. \nJoanne currently serves as an ex officio board member of the New York Council of Nonprofits and an advisory board member of the Legal Insurrection Foundation. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in American history from Cornell University. She currently resides in Renton\, Washington.

DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, November 20th\, the Martin Center welcomes Cary Nelson for a discussion of his latest book\, Hate Speech and Academic Freedom. \nAbout the book: \nCompleted shortly before Hamas carried out its barbaric October massacre\, Hate Speech and Academic Freedom takes up issues that have consequently gained new urgency in the academy worldwide. It is the first book to ask what impact antisemitism has had on the fundamental principles the academy relies on for its identity—academic freedom\, free speech rights\, standards for hiring or firing faculty members and administrators\, and the ethics of academic conduct and debate. \nAntisemitic hatred is spreading at a fever pitch. What steps can counter it? What damage to students is done when departments embrace anti-Zionism? Should faculty members face consequences for promoting antisemitism on social media? Should universities make a new push to adopt the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism? \n \nAbout the author: \nCary Nelson is a Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Illinos at Urbana-Champaign\, where he has taught since 1970. Nelson has authored over 30 books and 300 essays. Nelson served as president of the American Association of University Professors from 2006 to 2012. Nelson received his BA from Antioch College in 1967 and PhD from the University of Rochester in 1970. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
