SUMMARY:Donors Under Fire: The Critical Importance of Donor Intent to Higher Ed Philanthropy
DESCRIPTION:This event is being co-sponsored by the Bastiat Society of Raleigh. \nAt a time when philanthropy and wealth are under attack – and even cited as “failures” of both capitalism and democracy – it is critical to understand what donor intent is\, and is not. Donor intent is best understood as an expression of our values and principles in our charitable giving\, and protecting donor intent demonstrates respect for individual differences and choice\, maintains the integrity of private philanthropy over time\, and encourages continued voluntary action to sustain civil society. \nOn October 9\, Joanne Florino will speak on the importance of donor intent to higher education philanthropy. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but please consider making a $25 donation to help sustain the chapter. \nEventbrite registration required. \n_______________________ \nSchedule: \n6:00 PM – 6:30 PM: Networking Reception \n6:30 PM – 7:15 PM: Speaker Presentation \n7:15 PM – 7:30 PM: Q&A \n7:30 PM – 8:00 PM: Post Meeting Social Hour \n________________________ \nMore about the speaker: Joanne Florino is Philanthropy Roundtable’s Adam Meyerson distinguished fellow in philanthropic excellence. In that capacity she consults with and advises foundations and individual donors on operations\, management and governance issues with a special focus on protecting donor intent. Joanne previously served the Roundtable as vice president of philanthropic services\, and also as senior vice president for public policy. Prior to working at the Roundtable\, she volunteered on the strategy committee of the Alliance for Charitable Reform from 2006 until 2013. \nJoanne has worked at nonprofit and philanthropic organizations for her entire career. She was executive director of the Triad Foundation in Ithaca\, New York from April 2003 through March 2013. She was also executive director of the Park Foundation\, a program associate at The Atlantic Philanthropies and an instructor in American history at Cornell University and Ithaca College. \nJoanne currently serves as an ex officio board member of the New York Council of Nonprofits and an advisory board member of the Legal Insurrection Foundation. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in American history from Cornell University. She currently resides in Renton\, Washington.
