SUMMARY:Should You Go To Grad School? A Conversation About Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Join America’s Future and Jenna Robinson of the James G. Martin Center for a conversation about the future of higher education. \nAccording to a recent report by the Council of Graduate Schools\, the number of students enrolling in graduate school is steadily declining. While graduate school enrollment increased by 6% between 2010 and 2020\, it fell in 2022\, dropping by 4.7% between fall 2021 and fall 2022. \nSince this comes as the average student loan debt per borrower is around $38\,375\, with 42.7 million Americans holding federal student loan debt\, it begs the question: should you go to grad school? \nJoin Chris West of America’s Future and Jenna Robinson of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal for a virtual discussion about the future of higher education. Email Chloe at chloe@americasfuture.org. \n \nAbout Chris West:  \nChris is a native North Carolinian dedicated to advancing freedom in his home state through his role as Development Officer at the John Locke Foundation and as a leader with AF. As an ordained Baptist minister\, he often works at the intersection of religion and public life. Chris is a graduate of Campbell University\, Duke Divinity School\, the Wake Forest program in faith-based nonprofit leadership\, and the ABCD Institute at DePaul University. He has participated in fellowships with SPN\, the EA Morris program at Locke\, The James G Martin Center\, the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty\, and AF (Lead). Chris lives in Raleigh with his wife\, Melissa; their son\, Parker; and their dog\, Taxi. \nAbout Jenna Robinson: \nJenna Robinson is president of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. She joined the Martin Center in January 2007 as campus outreach coordinator and later became the center’s director of outreach. She was previously the E.A. Morris Fellowship assistant at the John Locke Foundation\, where she had worked since 2001. \nRobinson serves on the board of the Alumni Free Speech Alliance\, the UNC Alumni Free Speech Alliance\, the steering committee of the Bastiat Society of Raleigh\, and as a member of the Board of Visitors at UNC-Chapel Hill. She has previously served as a member of the North Carolina Longitudinal Data System Board\, the North Carolina Advisory Committee for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights\, and the Classical Liberals in the Carolinas. \nRobinson earned her bachelor’s degree from NC State University. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Robinson is also a graduate of the Koch Associate Program. She has taught courses in American politics at UNC-Chapel Hill\, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary\, and Wake Technical Community College. Robinson’s work has appeared in Investor’s Business Daily\, Roll Call\, Forbes\, American Thinker\, Human Events\, Carolina Journal\, and the Raleigh News & Observer. She lives in Cary\, NC\, with her husband and two sons.

SUMMARY:Education Book Webinar: Renewing the Marketplace of Ideas on Elite University Campuses
DESCRIPTION:In this free Education Book Webinar\, Duke University Professor Don Taylor will discuss his forthcoming book\, Renewing the Marketplace of Ideas on Elite University Campuses. Webinar attendees will have a chance to be part of the writing process by giving Professor Taylor feedback and asking questions to help him hone his ideas before the book is fully written! \nBook Synopsis: This book will describe how the marketplace of ideas on elite college campuses can be improved using existing resources. In doing so\, it will move beyond only describing problems in how students interact\, debate and express themselves on campus by providing a plausible plan to make things better. The book will focus on the undergraduate student body at elite universities\, the faculty who teach them\, and the importance of the campus marketplace of ideas both to student education (private good) and society as a whole (public good). The book will argue that faculty hired with academic freedom and intellectual flexibility is the only comparative advantage of the modern University over a think tank in the production of knowledge\, and the faculty must reassert intellectual leadership on campus if the marketplace of ideas is to be its most vibrant\, and productive. \n \nAbout the Author: Donald H. Taylor\, Jr. Ph.D.\, M.P.A. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (’90; ’92; ’95). Professor of Public Policy in the Duke Sanford School of Public Policy\, Duke University. Don Taylor is a health policy scholar whose research focuses on how society cares for the elderly\, including long term care\, Medicare and Medicaid policy and how they impact the long term fiscal situation of the United States. He is the author of over 100 peer review papers and three books including Balancing the Budget is a Progressive Priority (Springer\, 2012). He served a two-year term (2017-19) as the Chair of the Academic Council\, the elected leader of more than 2\,000 faculty at Duke University. From 2019 to 2024 he was the Director of the Social Science Research Institute. He has taught at least one class in 54 semesters across his 28 years at Duke. His current work focuses on the future of higher education and he writes the Two Ditches substack on the topic https://dontaylor13.substack.com/. Taylor is from Goldsboro\, N.C. and he and his wife Martha have been married since 1992\, and have three adult children.
