Raleigh, NC—In the first of a new series of policy papers, the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal published its recommendations for higher education policy makers on the topic of viewpoint diversity in academia.
Jenna A. Robinson, president of the Martin Center, said, “We all know that there isn’t much viewpoint diversity on campuses. The question is what to do about it. This brief addresses that question. It provides policymakers with a roadmap for reform.”
The first half of “Blueprint for Reform: Viewpoint Diversity” addresses the causes of viewpoint orthodoxy on college campuses and how the growth of a political monoculture jeopardizes academic freedom, open inquiry, honest debate, and the search for truth.
The second half of the paper provides specific steps for legislators, university board members, and faculty governing committee members who want to promote and protect viewpoint diversity on campus. The document also links to model policies and model legislation.
New policy reform recommendations on different topics will be released by the Martin Center biweekly.
