The North Carolina reporter will advance the Martin Center’s mission through writing, reporting, and research. He or she will report to Graham Hillard, the Center’s editor.
About the Martin Center:
The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is a nonprofit institute dedicated to improving higher education in North Carolina and across the nation. Our work focuses primarily on state and local solutions to higher-education problems. We advocate responsible governance, viewpoint diversity, academic quality, cost-effective education solutions, and innovative market-based reform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Write one well-researched long-form North Carolina-focused article each month and an occasional short op-ed.
- Keep up with North Carolina higher-education news and (remotely) observe UNC Board of Governors meetings.
- Conduct interviews (via Zoom) with higher-education stakeholders for publication on the Martin Center’s YouTube Channel.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Experience in policy, government, or journalism, or a record of successful freelance writing; internships may be considered experience.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Organization, creativity, adaptability, and detail-orientedness.
- Familiarity with classical-liberal principles and the institutions that underlie economic prosperity and freedom of action and conscience.
- Ability to work up to 10 hours/week.
- Preference will be given to candidates who live in or near Raleigh, NC.
Hourly pay commensurate with experience. Flexible hours. Ability to participate in the Martin Center’s Simple IRA (with 3% match).
