We’re Hiring: Editor at the Martin Center

About the Role: 

The Martin Center’s editor is a self-motivated and detail-oriented professional with impeccable editorial judgment and wide contacts in the higher education reform ecosystem. He or she oversees the Martin Center’s daily website commentary, writes articles, coordinates and edits in-house and freelance contributions, and may be heavily involved with the organization’s quarterly magazine, From the Academy. He or she is in broad agreement with the Martin Center’s commitment to responsible governance, viewpoint diversity, academic quality in teaching and learning, cost-effective education solutions, and innovative market-based reform.

Responsibilities:

  • Solicit, edit, and program (via WordPress) four or five articles per week for the Martin Center’s website. Typically, 70% of these articles must be solicited from new or returning Martin Center freelancers, while 30% come from staff writers, interns, outside pitches, or the editor him- or herself. 
  • Maintain the Martin Center’s editorial calendar(s), monitoring both near- and long-term trends in higher-ed governance and reform. 
  • Send three weekly e-newsletters to Martin Center subscribers, plugging new site content and other organizational information. 
  • Write occasional articles for the Martin Center’s website and actively place higher-ed commentary in other publications. 
  • Assist in the production of Martin Center reports, policy briefs, model policy, and blueprints for reform. 
  • Generally shape the Martin Center’s daily coverage, in coordination with the president, ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness of the organization’s analysis and commentary. 
  • Assist with the publication of From the Academy, the Martin Center’s themed digital quarterly, as assigned. 
  • Ensure the timely payment of freelance contributors. 
  • Stay apprised of higher-ed stories, trends, controversies, and developments, both nationally and in North Carolina.

Qualifications:

  • Five+ years’ experience in policy, government, or journalism
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Organized, creative, adaptable, and detail-oriented, with the discipline to work in a deadline-driven environment
  • Familiarity with Classical Liberal principles and the institutions that underlie economic prosperity and freedom of action and conscience
  • Experience with or willingness to learn WordPress required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

About the Martin Center: 

The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is a nonprofit institute dedicated to improving higher education in North Carolina and across the nation. Our work focuses primarily on state and local solutions to higher education problems.

This full-time, salaried position includes employer-funded health and dental insurance and the opportunity to participate in the Martin Center’s Simple IRA retirement program. Salary commensurate with experience. In-person and remote candidates will be considered.
