Thomas F. Powers

Thomas Powers teaches constitutional law and related classes in the political science department at Carthage College. He has written on a variety of topics exploring the relationship between law and political theory. He is the author of American Multiculturalism and the Anti-Discrimination Regime (2023, St. Augustine’s Press) and has written on the religion clauses of the First Amendment and civil liberties and the war on terror. He is also chair of the political science department and Carthage College’s pre-law coordinator. He earned a B.A. in political science from the University of Chicago, then served four years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army before earning a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Toronto.
