The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal has published Breaking Away From Leviathan: Colleges Can Thrive Without Federal Funding by senior fellow Jay Schalin.
When a college or university accepts federal funding, it is a double-edged sword. While it receives the funds it requires, it also has to follow a variety of laws, rules, and policies across the board. This new report describes the myriad issues that result from colleges’ acceptance of federal funding.
Jenna A. Robinson, president of the Martin Center, said, “I hope this report will be a roadmap for other schools who want to cut the ties with government funding.”
The paper provides specifics on the existence of schools that reject federal funding and on their merit. The document also goes into detail about the institutions, curricula, finances, and people related to these schools.
Schalin writes, “Independence from the government may be the best way to keep the spirit of free inquiry that lies at the center of higher education truly free.”
The report is available for download on the Martin Center’s website.
