Martin Center Managing Editor Garion Frankel and Rice University research psychologist Aaron Pomerantz co-authored an opinion piece for the Houston Chronicle examining the controversy surrounding Bo French’s comments about University of Texas football fans.
Drawing on their own college rivalries, the authors argue that college football brings Americans from different backgrounds together through a shared sense of belonging. They suggest that American politics could learn from football: fierce competition and disagreement need not come at the expense of mutual respect and national unity.
