[OPINION] The Carolina Journal: Women greatly outnumber men on UNC System campuses

Martin Center Research and Policy Fellow Shannon Watkins wrote an opinion piece examining the growing gender imbalance in higher education and the declining number of men on college campuses. Drawing on the Center’s policy brief, “Where Are All the Men? A Look at Male vs. Female Postsecondary Enrollment in North Carolina,” Watkins argues that rising costs, politicized campus culture, weak returns on investment, and K–12 disparities are all contributing to the trend. She also outlines several reforms, including restoring standardized testing and expanding career-oriented pathways.
