[PRESS RELEASE] The Martin Center Launches From the Academy, a New Quarterly Digital Magazine

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 12, 2026) The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal is proud to announce the launch of the inaugural issue of From the Academy, a new quarterly digital magazine dedicated to serious discussion of the most pressing issues in higher education.

Longtime followers of academic reform may recognize the name. The original From the Academy was the celebrated column by Russell Kirk that ran for 25 years in the pages of National Review. In reviving the title, the Martin Center seeks to renew the spirit of Kirk’s work: principled, intellectually serious, and unafraid to confront the deep challenges facing American higher education.

Each issue of From the Academy will focus on a single theme, allowing readers to explore one critical topic in depth.

The inaugural issue examines the decline of the liberal arts—and why we must not abandon truly humane education. It features essays by Annette Kirk and Andrea Kirk Assaf, as well as Walter Sterling, president of St. John’s College, and Alvino-Mario Fantini, editor-in-chief of The European Conservative. The issue also includes state and campus spotlights, interviews, and practical policy ideas aimed at renewing academic life.

Future issues will explore the history and future of Catholic higher education, civics education, and antisemitism on campus. By devoting each quarterly edition to a single topic, From the Academy aims to provide depth, clarity, and constructive proposals for reform at a time when higher education stands at a crossroads.
