[LETTER] In Support of UNC’s Proposed Policy on Syllabus Transparency

The Martin Center’s president, Jenna A. Robinson wrote a public letter to UNC System president Peter Hans praising a proposed regulation that would require universities to publish academic calendars, grading policies, and course syllabi. Robinson welcomed the UNC System’s recognition that syllabi are public records, noting that the Martin Center has advocated for syllabus transparency since 2008. She argued that the policy would strengthen public trust and accountability by giving students clearer expectations and improving access to course information. Robinson also suggested a refinement: requiring syllabi to list all required readings and materials, not just those students must purchase, to better support academic planning and transparency across the UNC System.
