The Chronicle of Higher Education reported on the growing debate within the UNC System over a proposed policy that would formally designate course syllabi as public records and require them to be publicly accessible. The policy has raised concerns among some faculty about politicized scrutiny and academic freedom, but proponents argue it would improve transparency and accountability. Jenna A. Robinson, president of the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, welcomed the move, noting the Center has long advocated for syllabus disclosure. “Making those syllabi public lets students, parents, [and] taxpayers know what it is that tuition and taxpayer dollars are going towards,” Robinson said, adding that syllabus transparency helps ensure classroom content aligns with course descriptions—the academic version of truth-in-advertising.
