Model Legislation: Accreditation Choice Act UPDATED July 2025

The Accreditation Choice Act aims to enhance educational freedom and improve accountability in higher education by expanding accreditation options for colleges and universities.

Key Points of the Accreditation Choice Act:

  1. Expanded Accreditation Options: The Act allows institutions of higher education to choose from a broader selection of accrediting bodies, enabling them to align with organizations that reflect their unique missions and educational goals.
  2. Respect for state laws: The Act prohibits accreditors from compelling institutions to violate state laws.
  3. Nondiscrimination: Institutions cannot discriminate in hiring and admissions against students or faculty based on the accreditor of that person’s academic program or institution.

Through these provisions, the Accreditation Choice Act seeks to foster a higher education environment that is more adaptable, accountable, and better positioned to meet the demands of students and citizens.
